Security of US borders and illegal immigration

Immigration has been a recurring issue in the United States for a very long time. Hanson (2007) defines illegal immigration as the entry of foreign people to a nation without permission from the government of that nation or by violation of the law of nationality in that nation. Many illegal immigrants have been reported to cross the United States borders every year. Such reports have sparked the United States government to pursue an initiative of expanding the power of the government to secure the borders of the nation against illegal immigrants.

For almost a decade now, there have been a large number of illegal immigrants in the United States. This large number has been as a result of lack of or poor border security and a broken immigration system. Border security and immigration must go hand in hand because protecting the borders will help reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the United States. According to Council of Foreign Relations (2009) the number of illegal immigrants in the United States are more than the number of legal immigrant and an estimated number of fourteen million people live in families whose head are illegal immigrants.

Illegal immigration is caused by different factors. One of them is illegal entry by being smuggled into the country. Another factor is visa overstay. Immigrants come to America with legal visas but they stay in the nation after the visa admission has expired. These immigrants are mostly tourist, visitors and business people. Another factor is the violation of the border crossing card. The United States government has made efforts to put some measures in place to enhance border security and reduce illegal immigration. Passel (2011) explains that the United States government has increased the number of agents doing the border patrol from three thousand agents to twenty one thousand agents.

Use of technology has been very fundamental in these efforts for example sensor cameras, pilotless drones and other technologies have been deployed to prevent illegal crossings and movements at the United States borders. The immigration system has also been improved for example the process of acquiring a visa has been intensified by including interviews, screenings of applicants background and requirements of legal national documents such as a national identity card and birth certificate.

A nation without borders is not a nation. The borders of a country enable it to have control over its resources, people and facilities. It is therefore mandatory for United States to have good border security and control its borders for the purposes of reducing the number of illegal immigrants in the nation. The United States government has made efforts to ensure border security for the purposes of creating a border control system that ensures that only those who are legally allows to enter United States will be able to do so.
